Rapper’s Recession

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Apologies for the lack of blog from me this last while. Where to start, hmm?: I watched 5th Element and experience the future-paradise that is Milton Keynes for the first time, played some amazing gigs, and wrote some new songs…

With the rhymes not paying the bills as easily as I’d like a few odd jobs were taken on this last while. I was stage manager for this nation-wide music/coffee tour, which means I had to make sure dreamy-space-cadet artists don’t get lost on the way to the stage. Spinal Tap is a reality! During the tour we did get a chance to check out some Banksy originals in Bristol, it’s the street equivilant of seeing the Monalisa ‘in the paint’…A-MA-ZING.
Other money grabbing schemes have seen me standing in the cold with a sign on my body, serving coffee, unblocking drains, gardening, I tell you it’s been all sorts.

The recession has hit rappers hard.

On the road I had various fails. EPIC BABE FAIL #
So I thought this girl was into me (typical) after some time I divided to visit her at the Nugget store she had told me about. I put my balls on the table and went ‘so I’m going to this gig tonight, wanna come?’. Th dude next to her behind the till pipes up ‘I’m sorry me and my FIANCE her are busy!’

:/

So with the girlfriend quest as dire as ever I’m pleased to tell you songwriting is on the up, I’m in a creative nirvana space candy floss bubble.

I’m playing an acoustic gig at the Goldhawk Tavern in Shepard’s Bush on this coming Wednesday (30th of November). Come down to here some new bits and coupled with the classics. FREE ENTRY!

When coming to watch me if you see these you’re in the right place!

Recently audiences coming to acoustic gigs including the prestigious/arty/serious British Film Institute have turned ‘Superstars’ into a Kape-Karoeke.

If all goes to plan Wednesday will not be any different.

The Game – Lax (prep for the Red Album)

Friday, April 1st, 2011

I was completely convinced that Game had one angle; Documentary. It’s one of the greatest hip hop debuts of all time, I had that joint on loop for weeks. But the more time invest in Game the more I realise this is a cat that genuinely takes what he does very seriously. The distance between Documentary and Doctors Advocate is vast. And then their comes LAX.

The first track (LAX Files) sets the tone for the album, Game sounds like an old G from the top. He proves his worth as more than just a West-Coast through back. Before you think this album is all deep and reflective don’t be disheartened Game doesn’t entirely neglect the ‘Californian Chronic Joints’. ‘State of Emergency’ shows he can still rep for the LA; the beat dons a classic Dre sound however it was produced (along with LAX Files) by my South African homeboy J.R. Rotem.

On a first listen my concentration wavers throughout the middle of the album. This may well be because it goes a bit RnB and smooth which puts me in a chill-out sleepy zone. As soon as the Yeezy produced ‘Angel’ feat. Common hits I’m immediately woken up and pumped. It’s an incredible track. Common has always been one of the finest MC’s around and this is the smoothest funk-electro Yeezy production I’ve heard. The album ends poignantly with ‘Letter to the King’; any track that features Nas the master of honest street poetry is bound to move me. Nas inspires Game dig deep and spit from the soul.

All in all on a first listen I am impressed with LAX as an effort. It’s a brave move for Game and has some great moments. Now it’s time for the RED ALBUM!

I’ll leave you to have a look at this one:

Take me away from the hood, like a state penitentiary
Take me away from the hood, in a casket or a Bentley
Take me away, like I overdosed on cocaine
Or take me away, like a bullet from Kurt Cobain
Suicide, I’m from a +Windy City+, like Do or Die
From a block close to where Biggie was crucified
That was Brooklyn’s Jesus, shot for no fuckin reason
And you wonder why Kanye wears Jesus pieces? (my life, my life)
Cause that’s Jesus people, and Game, he’s the equal
Hated on some much “Passion of Christ” need a sequel
Yeah, like Roc-a-Fella need a Sigel
Like I needed my father, but he needed a needle (my life, my life)
I need some meditation, so I can lead my people
They askin why, why did John Lennon leave The Beatles?
And why every hood nigga feed off evil?
Answer my question ‘fore this bullet leave this Desert Eagle
We are not the same, I am a Martian

So approach my Phantom doors with caution
You see them 24′s spinnin? I earned ‘em
And I ain’t no preacher but, here’s my Erick Sermon
So eat this black music, and tell me how it taste now
And fuck Jesse Jackson cause it ain’t about race now
Sometimes I think about my life, with my face down
Then I see my sons and put on that Kanye smile (my life, my life)
Damn, I know his momma proud
And since you helped me sell my +Dream+ we can share my momma now
And like M.J.B., +No More Drama+ now
Livin the +Good Life+, me and Common on common ground
I spit crack, and niggaz could drive it out of town
Got a Chris Paul mindstate, I’m never out of bounds
My life used to be empty like a glock without a round
Now my life full, like a chopper with a thousand rounds

Walk through the gates of hell, see my Impala parked in front
With the high beams on, me and the devil sharin chronic blunts
Listenin to the “Chronic” album, playin backwards
Shootin at pictures of Don Imus for target practice
My mind fucked up, so I cover it with a Raider hood
I’m from the city that made you motherfuckers afraid of Suge
{“Compton, Compton”} Made my grandmother pray for good
It never made her happy, but I bet that new Mercedes could (my life, my life)
Ain’t no bars, but niggaz can’t escape the hood
And it took so many of my niggaz, that I should hate the hood
But it’s real niggaz like me, that make the hood
Ridin slow in that Phantom just the way I should (my life, my life)
With the top back, in my Sox hat
I’m +Paid in Full+, the nigga Alpo couldn’t stop that
Even if they brought the nigga ‘Pac back
I’ll still keep this motherfucker cocked back

Album Highlights: My Life, Angel, Letter to the King, LAX Files

Weezy no longer sounding like a groaning granny

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

I have taken a long time to catch onto the Weezy thing. I just haven’t managed to get it. It’s like what he doing he sounds like an old granny groaning and then like t-pain with auto-tune. With track the penny has dropped for me. I GET LIL WAYNE! DAMN IT’S HOT! His lines are power packed punches which enough space between them for you to let me soak in. Incredible.
